Google Analytics is a free web service that provides detailed statistics about a website’s traffic and traffic sources. Coupled with OrgSync, this resource allows you to to better understand your audience, trace user paths, and see what people are up to. This data is crucial in creating a more effective and engaging OrgSync community.
The first step towards Google Analytics integration is to sign up with their service. Start by visiting the Google Analytics website and follow the instructions they provide to sign up. If you do not already have a Google account, you will need to create one.Next, you will be prompted to set up basic settings for the website you’d like to track. See below for our recommended settings for some of the options available to you.
- Select a tracking method: Universal Analytics is preferred over Classic Analytics because it provides more reporting features and access to new product updates.
- Account Name: This is the top-level account name that can contain multiple tracking IDs. In most cases, we recommend using the name of your school.
- Website Name: This is the name of the website you’d like to track. You can have multiple websites under a particular account. We recommend creating a name that easily identifies your OrgSync community (i.e. State University OrgSync Community).
- Website URL: Change the http dropdown to https and input www.orgsync.com as the address.
After you’ve located the tracking ID, you’ve done half the work. The next step is to input the ID in OrgSync. If you want to integrate Analytics with your OrgSync community (the application itself), continue reading. If you want to integrate Analytics with a public website (created through the website builder), skip to the next section.
To begin, log in to your OrgSync community. Next, select the Admin dropdown in the top right of your screen, choose your community, select the Settings tab along the white toolbar, select the Setup tab from the lefthand toolbar, then select Google Analytics from the lefthand toolbar. Enter your Google Analytics tracking ID and save. At this point, Google Analytics will begin logging traffic in your community.
As mentioned in the last section, integrating Analytics with your community only tracks pages within the OrgSync application. If you want to track a website created through OrgSync’s website builder, continue reading for instructions on how to do so.
First, you will need to generate a new tracking ID in Google Analytics. This is to ensure a separation of data between your community and public websites. Users will navigate the two sites differently and combining the two can skew overall statistics. Additionally, the data is easier to interpret and make accurate assumptions when it is separate.
Typically, Google Analytics requires that you paste this snippet in every webpage you'd like to track. Due to the structure of OrgSync’s website builder, this is done automatically when you insert the code into the Meta/Head. After you save, Google Analytics will begin collecting data.
